There is but one flame - Heavenly Vermillion,
There is but one path, though its names are million.
In the roar of flesh rings the heart's pure chord,
There is but one truth and but one Our Lord.
Think of how His faith multiplied the loaves,
All my life I gave to the Adept's oath,
Laugh and disbelieve, give me to the courts,
But I know full well where I set my course.
Patience and yearning I weave together,
To the Lord on high, like a silken tether,
Cast a supplication, on burning breath:
Give me Transformation - or give me death !
Chosen are few - and the rest are blinded.
Fooling with the gold is for feeble-minded,
They profane, they mask in a veil of lies,
Her who was my Mistress, who was my Guide.
So then I took a third part of burning,
Whispered a name - and went blind to learning,
Darkness fell on me, scorching through my brain,
And my blood stood still in a tangled skein.
Bells and violins drown out reason,
At the mansion crypt revenants have risen,
Two steps from damnation, beyond regrets:
Give me Transmutation - or give me death !
Blood and sweat I mixed in an equal measure,
Blended in the tears and forswore all leisure,
And created tincture, which has no peer,
And my sight came back and the light was near.
Fire of my hearth in my soul blazes,
I gave it my ear and was deaf to praises,
I forgot the tongues and no tale could tell,
He who gains the world must give up his self.
As the angels laughed, so the demons frowned,
Doors were opened up and the veils torn down,
One step from salvation, the brass attests:
Give me Resurrection - or give me...!
